Tooth color fillings "white filling" are replacing amalgams "silver filling" in cosmetic dentistry. One advantage of the tooth color fillings is a more natural appearance. More importantly, your dentist will not have to remove as much tooth structure. Bonding is used to repair chips and spaces between the teeth. In these cases, the dentist uses tooth color filling material to fill the spaces or repair chips. This procedure can usually be done without being numbed. Whitening is the least expensive and simplest way to brighten the color of your teeth. Bleaching is used to whiten dark, dull or stained teeth. We have found that the take home method gives the best results in the long term. However, we do provide the one hour, in-office bleaching for faster results. This process usually needs to be followed with other recommended products.

Porcelain Veneers are a thin piece of porcelain (similar to a contact lens) that resembles the enamel of the tooth. There is minimal tooth structure removal and when made they are bonded to the front surface of the tooth. Veneers can change the color, shape, and size of the tooth and make the tooth more natural and beautiful mimicking mother nature’s luminosity and opalescence. They are ideally used for stains and discolored teeth, fillings that are too large and noticeable, crooked or misaligned teeth, chipped teeth, worn down teeth, spaces between the teeth, or teeth too short, long or wide. There are two types of porcelain veneers in cosmetic dentistry that your dentist will decide which one is best for you. Feldspathic veneers, such as “lumineers ” brand are used when closing spaces or making slight tooth color changes. Usually you do not have to grind off any enamel or if you do, very minimal such that numbing is not necessary nor any temporaries need to be made. The disadvantage with this technique is that they can be a little bit bulky since your adding porcelain to the front of the tooth that has not been prepped. Pressed veneers “Empress” are the second type of veneer. The tooth is reduced .5 to .7 mm so they do not feel bulky. In this case a patient needs to be numb and temporaries are made while the final product is finished. While wearing the temporaries, the dentist can shape them to the patient’s satisfaction and then permanent veneers are duplicated to that look. Most veneers today are made by the “pressed” technique because the patients want something that not only looks good but feels good as well.
